Asia Infrastructure 2018 Expo News: SARAWAK TO BUILD LRT

In the recently revealed 2018 Budget for Sarawak, an allocation has been made to fund feasibility studies for the development of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Sarawak. According to Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sarawak Chief Minister, if all goes well, LRT construction in the state could commence by 2019.

Electric trains are likely to be used for the proposed LRT as Sarawak has an abundance of electricity produced from its hydroelectric power plants in Bakun, Batang Ai and Murum. In addition, the fourth hydroelectric power plant located in Baleh is anticipated to produce approximately 1,400 MW of energy once completed in 2025. The LRT system would cater to the growth of Kuching and its neighbouring areas.

The LRT project proposal is evident that Sarawak is undergoing rapid modernisation in its transportation and infrastructure development. In line with this, Asia Infrastructure 2018 – the International Infrastructure Development Exhibition & Conference is back and will be taking place from 23-25 January 2018 at the Borneo Convention Centre, Kuching, Malaysia. The third edition in the series will offer companies in Sarawak’s supply chain such as transport, construction, utilities and communications infrastructure sector with unique opportunities to showcase their capabilities to a wide audience consisting of major industry players and decision makers.

Asia Infrastructure 2018 will be co-located with International Energy Week 2018. The last event in 2015 attracted a total of 3,708 delegates and trade visitors and is now recognised as one of the key international events for the infrastructure and energy sector in the region.

Sarawak’s economy is projected to grow at 6.5% a year and it is on the right track with its extensive development plans led by the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) initiatives as well as the RM 29 billion Pan Borneo Highway project. This will surely attract huge opportunities to infrastructure players including consultants, contractors, and machinery and equipment suppliers.
